5 Core Competent Skills Brought to you by Flippa Ball 1. Dealing with the unknown Keep yourself and others safe - be aware of your surroundings when swimming. 2. Respect the strength of the water Respecting the strength of the water is important so you know how to handle yourself in all conditions. 3. Awareness of body position and movement Having the correct stance keeps your body balanced and keeps you from being knocked over by a strong current or wave. 4. Stay calm under pressure Keeping calm and being able to make quick decisions under pressure will help you stay safe. 5. Swimming in difficult situations Be mindful of each and everyone's space while swimming - make sure you're not in the way.

Top New Zealanders lend support to child water safety initiative

Some of New Zealand’s biggest names have joined the drive to improve the water skills of kiwi kids, helping to launch a new water safety initiative. Prime Minister John Key, Warrior’s captain Steve Price, The Warehouse Founder, Stephen Tindall and TV presenter Lana Coc-Kroft were all at the launch of the Flippa Ball National Water Competency Programme in Auckland today.

Owned and run by New Zealand Water Polo, new look FLIPPA BALL provides a fun, competitive, team sport challenge.

It delivers all the benefits associated with sport and physical exercise, as well as introducing its young players to the principles of Water Competence – making them stronger swimmers and more water aware by teaching skills they can take to the beach, river or lakeside.

FLIPPA BALL is available to children in years 3, 4, 5 & 6, and because it’s played with feet on the floor everyone can play- no matter how well they swim.
