Marist may have been a bit jaded from last nights big match but they didnt figure that the Maranui merry band of 10 would give them such a fright in this afternoons game at Sacred Heart. Maranui held out the Magic throughout the first half leading 6-5 at the break. And it took the end of the third quarter before Marist hit the lead at 7-6. They hung on grinly against a Maranui side reduced by the end of the 4th quarter to just 7 players to win 10-8. Maranui grabbed a very valuable bonus point in the run into the next stage of games. Phil Howat proved a saviour for the Magic with 4 goals whilst Lachie Tijsen marked his return to first class water polo after a long lay off due to injury with a 3 goal bag for the Mudcrabs.

Not only did the Waitakere Blue Devils fend off the QE11 Crushers from Christchurch , they did it in style denying the visitors a bonus point and reversing a 4 goal loss a month ago in Christchurch. The Waitakere side won 15-9 in a game which showed how quickly the West Auckland based team in improving and signalled to some of the leading teams the possibility of a surprise in the latter half of the season. Waitakere lead early to see that whittled away and QE11 take the lead at the start of the second quarter 4-2. But 4 unanswered goals saw Waitakere strike back to lead 6-4 at the half break. A 5-0 third quarter gave Waitakere the momentum they needed and they ran out comfortable winners in the end 15-9 over the southerners. For Waitakere Michael Brooks, Paul Weeks and Jamie Cameron each netted 3 goals whilst Fraser Bickley again belied his youth with another 5 goal bag for QE11.

North Harbour after a slow start conquered the QE11 Crushers 14-4 at the Millennium Institute Pool tonight whilst Maranui took out their match against the Waitakere Blue Devils by 13-4.
North Harbours attack was led by Jake Bennett who netted 4 times for Harbour whilst David Broome chimed in with 3. Zoltan Boros netted twice for QE11 who had earlier held the League leaders to a 0-1 first quarter. Maranui's Lachie Tijsen once again showed his worth with 3 goals although Jono Ros top scored with 4. QE11 take on Marist Magic tomorrow at Sacred Heart at 1.30pm whilst the Maranui Mudcrabs face a meeting with North Harbour at the MISH at 11.15am looking to upset the leaders after 2 fairly solid performances today.

The evening started with the "Magic Moments"playing Ëye of the Tiger" and ended with another moment moment as North Harbour's Scott Taylor scored from an extra man attack with 3 seconds remaining to break the deadlock and give North Harbour an 11-10 victory.
Marist opened the match with a 4-2 lead which saw the two teams back at 6 all by the half time break. Marist kept its nose in front for the next 2 quarters until when Alex Reed netted for North Harbour inside the 2 minute mark to level the scores again. The game looked destined for a draw between the 2 unbeaten sides but North Harbour netted with 3 seconds remaining. A Marist timeout failed to net the equaliser and North Harbour go unbeaten for the season. Thomas Kearns and Chris Broome each netted three goals for the North Harbour side a figure matched by Johnathon Ware for Marist. The match played in front of a packed house was fitting for the top of the table clash and featured no fewer than 16 Under 20 players - 8 in each side - signalling that the future of Mens water polo in NZ looks to have a good base to build on. Marist and North Harbour both take on Maranui and QE11 over the next two days with both visitinng teams also playing the Waitakere Blue Devils.
